Come Sail Away With Me

I went sailing for the first time today. I had a lot of fun. Even though it was more work than I bargained for, it was worth the effort. The weather was wonderful, not a cloud in the sky, and a perfect breeze.

I agreed to go on the assumption that the owner of the sailboat knew all about sailing. Little did I know, until this morning, that he is learning how to sail and has only been out 3 times before today. I began the trip a little nervous, but soon conquered those feelings. The best way to learn is by trial and error (at least it is for me), and that’s exactly what we did. We left the marina about 10am and spent the first 2 hours sailing up and down the channel learning how to tack without looking like complete amateurs. Once we had the hang of it, and a bite to eat, we decided to head off shore.

As we headed for the open ocean, we were tacking like pros and tweaking the sails for optimal speed. With the boat at a 60 degree angle and the sailed filled with wind, we reached a whopping 7 knots. We celebrated our accomplishments with hoorays and high-fives. We got about 4 miles off shore and decided it was time to turn back. The afternoon was growing weak, and we were ready for solid ground.

After quick showers at the marina and with sunburned shoulders and wind chapped faces we headed for a well deserved dinner. We ate at a little hole in the wall place, Barbara Jeans. They are known for the crab cakes, which I do not eat. So like always, I had a cheeseburger…AML, you know the drillJ The food was fabulous and sweet tea to die for. With full bellies, we headed to the house.

I wanted to include some pics.... but this piece of junk is not allowing me to do so tonight. I know you were looking forward to them, so try back soon. Hopefullly I will have more success tomorrow.
